The difficulty of judging distance on a screen, coupled with trying to drive using a controller, and I completed my first rally with two bare rims and a car almost falling apart.

Yep. You pretty much have to use a wheel, and it’s still hard.

PICS! would love to see the visual detail of a car almost falling apart :D

I briefly tried it with a controller just to see what my friend was dealing with, and I could never play it without my wheel.

I’m doing reasonably well without a wheel. Make no mistake, I’m far from fantastic, but I’m fairly confident I can’t blame most of my failures on the control method.
I’d like a wheel, but I hate the idea of paying out for one, and then being unable to play, say, Forza with it. Bloody Microsoft...

Crinkle up a piece of paper and you’ll get an approximate image.

I’ve tried playing racing games with wheels before, and I cannot do it. It just feels weird.
That and I’ve never had a desk/table at the right height.
